While Jerome Increase Case established Racine Threshing Machine Works in 1842 with the invention of the thresher, it wasn’t much later (1847) that Cyrus McCormick started McCormick Harvesting Machine Company, which would later become International Harvester. The two companies crossed paths in 1871, when Case offered to build machines for McCormick after The Great Chicago Fire destroyed his factories.

From there, both companies went on to innovate additional technologies separately. Case introduced the first self-propelled traction steam engine (1876), a gasoline-powered tractor (1892), and the first all-steel thresher machine (1904). Meanwhile, International Harvester introduced the kerosene-powered Titan tractors (1915), the first commercial power take off (1919), and the legendary Farmall (1923) to the market. It wasn’t until 1985 that both companies united to become Case IH, the second largest farm equipment manufacturer in the world. And, just 14 years later, Case IH would go on to become part of CNH Industrial, a world-class equipment and services company.
